Leapers (in Greek σαλταδόροι ) where kids and other young people that during the Occupation of Greece by the Nazis in 1942-45 would leap on Nazi trucks and steal anything they could, from food to tools, at immediate risk of being shot to death. Hence their name.

This particular introductory snippet that sets the mood for Fotis' little gang, is also a tribute to the great greek writer Dimitris Psathas (Δ. Ψαθάς) and his short stories about children during the Occupation, under the group title 'The gamins' (Οι Πιτσιρίκοι) . Those of you who have read those short stories will immediately know where this is going, but don't give away the secret!
